Oh my, it has been a while since our last update. CoVid restrictions really ground live music and performing to a near stand still. Worry not my friends, we are still around.
While we have been on break our very own Barry Truter has written a book. Yes, you heard me correctly. Barry has published his first book.
"Traveller - Stories and Songs in the Key of Connection" is a collection of songs (music and all), stories, poems, and personal memories all sewn together with the theme of travelling. All things Barry holds dear to his heart.
If you are interested in purchasing a copy, please reach out to Barry at [email protected]
They are $25 each.

Well, CoVid 19 has sure derailed our year so far. We have had to cancel all our scheduled shows for 2020.
As things have been starting to relax we have been starting to get together and have a few outdoor practices in Barrys back courtyard. Its nice to be able to make music with other people after being apart for so long.
Barry recently came into possession of a video shot back in 2019 of us singing the classic Mississippi John Hurt tune, The Angels Laid Him Away. It was recorded by friend David Wilson at the Hollyburn Sailing Club in West Vancouver.

Well, our "come together" concert at the Tipper Restaurant was so much fun. We got together with Falconhunter (Char Hunter and George Faulkner), Melanie Goestl, and Hagen Mitchell and played some fabulous music for a even more fabulous audience.
Falcon Hunter played a set of mostly original tunes. It was nice to watch the two of them trade instruments and time on the mic. The pair really held the audiences attention with how tight they are as group.
After a short intermission Melanie and Hagen were invited up on stage. Man these two are meant to sing/make music together. both have an un-natural gift at song writing and their melodies are something that need to be heard.
After Melanie and Hagen, we got up on stage. We brought a set of mostly new/less played tunes. Of coarse we had a Bob Dylan cover that our fans have come to expect. This time around we played "it takes a train...........".
At the end of the show we invited all the musicians on stage and played on last song together, took our bows, and bid everyone a good night.

We are beyond excited to hosting a great night of music on Nov. 7. We have some great friends in the music scene here in Vancouver who like, Craig, have long seeded roots in skateboarding and make great music. We had the idea of bringing a few of these people together and hosting a night at the Tipper restaurant.
Falcon Hunter is made up of long time skateboarders Char Hunter and George Faulkner. They are both fantastic musicians and will be bringing some great original tunes to the stage.
Hagen Mitchell and Melanie Goestl seem to have voices made for each other. Not to mention their amazing song writing abilities. You will hear some of these original and a few covers on the 7th.
We will round out the evening with a couple originals and a bunch of old country blues staples and rarities.
The Tipper can only hold 50 people, so please reach out to us via our contact page if you would like to come for the evening.
See you there.

Well, last weekend was something else. Ellen, Barry, and Craig preformed at the Princeton Traditional Folk Festival on both days and enjoyed the whole experience thoroughly.
This festival is really something special. Musicians come from all over the west coast, Washington, and even as far away as Montreal to share their gift of music.
On the Saturday we shared the stage with Henk Piket, Robert Bertrand from Merit, and Mike Marker, for an hour long exploration into the blues. Each of us shared a few songs and then all came together for a energetic version of Robert Johnsons “Walking Blues”.
Then on Sunday we played a full set on the Museum stage!
Hopefully they will find themselves taking part in 2020’s festival.

Barry and Craig will be joining the festivities at the Vancouver Folk Song Society's 60th Anniversary event. It will be a full day of singing, workshops, instruments, and delicious food. Barry and Craig will be hosting a blues workshop at 10am.
"traditional down-home country blues are some of the most political and personal of folk songs. Come join us as we explore the folk roots of this influential style of music. Share your favourite blues song, and tell us why it engages you."

OK, the dust has settled and we have regained our breath after two back to back shows last weekend.
We played the CrossRoads Coffee Hospice in Port Coquitlam as the feature on the Friday evening. The room was full of attentive listeners who really seemed to appreciate what we brought to the table. Of coarse Ellen was there as our special guest bringing some beautiful songs, harmonies, and mandolin playing.
Big thanks to Bill and Kate Marshall for bringing us out and for sharing some beautiful tunes on the open stage.
The next night was our annual feature at the Tipper Restaurant. Oh my lord! What a night. This may have been one of our best shows to date. A full room of guests who joined in on every song with the most amazing harmonies.
Sometimes standing on stage listening to the crowd sing along to your songs is the best part.
Our stage chemistry was as tight as our musical deliveries. Barry was in high form singing loud and never missing a note on that old guitar of his. Craig genuinely looked and sounded like he was having the time of his life and his national guitar playing was testament to this. Ellen absolutely shone like the brightest star in the room. Her singing must be heard to truly appreciate any accolades we can offer.
Big thanks to our set up crew and to all of our fans who made it out to hear us.

Well, it's been a fun two weeks for Barry, Craig, and Ellen. They played a nice little gig at the Hollyburn Folk Club in West Vancouver last Friday with the Re:Sisters and the Earbuds. It's a nice intimate atmosphere with a very attentive audience.
Last night was the Tipper Supper Series seasonal special and Barry was one of the features. He had friends come up and join him for each of his tunes. Of coarse Craig and Ellen joined him for their upbeat version of Creole Belle, and Marian Buechert, Roger Holdstock, Kathy Griffin and Don Fraser joined him for a few numbers as well. It was a fantastic evening, raising $900 for the Vancouver food bank.
The boys and Ellen will be taking a break for a few weeks until Jan 25/26th when they have back to back shows at the Crossroads Coffeehouse and the Tipper Restaurant and Review Room.

The boys and the talented Ellen van der Hoeven are playing at the Hollyburn Sailing Club's "Folk Music on the Beach" on Dec. 7th. They are one of the two opening acts for the main feature which is the Earbuds. The other opening act is the Re:Sisters, a Vancouver folk music staple.
There is a $10 cover at the door. Things should get rolling at 8pm. So if you want to hear some great music get there early.

After a bit of a break for the summer, the boys are back in the swing of things with regular practices and some upcoming shows.
They are also pleased to be collaborating with Vancouver folk staple, Ellen van der Hoeven. Ellen brings her beautiful voice and harmonies into the mix as well as adding some fantastic mandolin playing! She has played with the boys before during their 2016 Tipper Supper Series show and definitely enhanced their sound in all the right ways. Ellen will be joining them on stage for the next three shows and quite possibly a few more.
The first of these shows will be as an opening act at the Hollyburn Folk Club on Dec 7th in West Vancouver. The show is at the Hollyburn Sailing Club at 1326 Argyle Ave. Doors open at 7:30 pm and there is $10 charge.

Craig played a solo set at the Music and More on Main coffee house this past Thursday. He played a few songs by himself, but had Hagen Mitchell and Barry join him for some songs as well. Barry and Craig played one of Craig's originals and an older Bob Dylan tune "One More Cup of Coffee". It was a fun evening and the open stage was pretty darn solid too.
Thanks to Susan Stout for the pictures.

Wow! What a great time at the Tipper Restaurant’s, Tipper Supper Series! We shared a feature with the amazing Roger Holdstock, who was supposed to be partnered up with the talented Kathy Griffin. Unfortunately she had some important family matters to attend to so Roger came up with a last minute set of solo tunes, and accompaniments by Andrea Smith and Barry Truter.
We had a blast on stage and offered a few new songs to the audience, including two lesser known Bob Dylan tunes, "One More Cup of Coffee" and "Buckets of Rain". When playing to a room full of Dylan fans , it's good to play a few Dylan tunes. 😊
The Tipper Supper Series never disappoints. Up next on March 17th is Just Duets, featuring Andrea Smith and Kathy Francis.

Happy New Year!
Wow! What a year 2017 was!
The boys had a great start to the year with a few shows all the while staying very musically active within the Vancouver acoustic music community, with personal shows and with their other bands "Fraser Union" and "Whiskey and the Wailin' Witch". The latter half of the year saw them take a little pause in playing to focus on a few personal projects.
One of those projects was the creation and release of Craig's new album, "In Good Company", a collaboration with longtime friend George Faulkner who recorded, produced, played on, and mastered the project.

Wow, its been more than 4 months already?!?! Time sure flies when you're having fun. Barry and Craig have been busy the last little while with a few other projects. Barry has been doing a number of shows with Fraser Union while Craig has been busy with his other band, "Whiskey and the Wailin' Witch".
Things are getting back on track for these two and you should be seeing/hearing a bunch from them soon.
Its still quite a ways away, but they will be a part of the TIPPER SUPPER SERIES, with a show on Feb 17, 2018. It will be a double feature show with Kathy Griffin and fellow Fraser Union band member, Roger Holdstock. Should be a great night of music.
See the poster below to see the dates the other great acts will be playing. There are some great performers lined up!

Things have been a little quiet for the boys as of late. A few practices have gone down but no shows for a little while. We are sure all of that will change as spring kicks into full swing. Barry and Craig are getting together tomorrow, so we should have some news to share soon.

What a fun show last night for the boys at Music and More on Main. The open stage was amazing. There's so much musical talent in this city!
The boys unleashed a few new tunes last night. An original slide guitar influenced version of “Wayfaring Stranger”. Another version of a version of an original instrumental tune the boys are calling “Buttered Yams”. This is their take on Booker T’s “Sweet Potatoes”.
With Craig delving deep into the world of fly fishing it only seemed fitting that they came up with an original arrangement of Henry Thomas’ “Fishing Blues”. Bob Dylan always features one way or another in their gigs, and this time they played “From a Buick 6”.
A few JJJ staples were thrown in and the show was a wrap. All in all another great gig at one of Vancouver’s fun music communities.

The boys are the feature at Music and More on Main next Thursday the 16th. This great little coffee house music community is located at the Little Mountain Neighborhood House on Main Street in Vancouver, BC.
The doors open at 7pm. The open stage starts at 7:30pm. If last week's open stage is any sort of gauge, it should be phenomenal! There will be a short break for tea and cookies and then the boys will be up to do their thing.
They have been working on a bunch of new material and are pretty excited to share it.

Huge thanks to DOXA for showing “Two Trains Runnin'” and for inviting The Jook Joint Jokers to do a pre-screening set of 3 songs by Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, and Taj Mahal. The movie is a very poignant documentary about the search for blues musicians Son House and Skip James in 1964 in the midst of the civil rights movement and the murders of three civil rights workers in Mississippi. It was excellent, which is not surprising given the quality of what DOXA presents at its annual Film Festival. If you've not sampled the DOXA festival before, you may want to check it out next year.

Barry and Craig had the pleasure of hosting Little Mountain Trio this past Saturday at the Tipper Supper Series. The long running band made up of Kitty King (vocals/stand up bass), Rob McGregor (vocals/mandolin), and David Lindstone (vocals/guitar), played a fabulous set of Country, Swing, Blues, originals, and tradition tunes that kept all of us engaged for the whole evening.

My lord! What a fun show for the boys on Saturday at the Tipper Restaurant. All the right people were there! You should have heard some of the harmonies coming out of the crowd as they joined in on more than a few tunes with the Jokers. Audience participation is always encouraged and is the cherry on the sundae for Craig and Barry when they perform. Hagen Mitchell and Melanie Goestl opened the evening, and knocked it right out of the park. Their song writing and beautiful melodies, not to mention Hagens fantastic guitar playing, were so beautiful. You wouldn’t have believed this was their first live performance together. The boys were not satisfied with their short opening set so they invited them back onstage for the closing number. All in all, a fantastic evening! Many thanks to the Tipper Restaurant for hosting us, Kitty and Dave for handling introductions and the ticket table, Jane for her amazing back drop on the stage, and for everyone who came to share a night of live music in Vancouver, BC

Hagen Mitchell and Melanie Goestl will be bringing their combination of intricate guitar work, melodic singing , and outstanding song writing to the table. The boys were able to get together last week to come up with a rough set list for their upcoming Tipper Supper Series show in Oct.
They are adding a grip of new songs which may or may not include Lead Belly’s “in the Pines” and “Bourgeois Blues”, and a few others. They will also have a sweet no duo opening for them that is comprised of Melanie Goestl and Hagen Mitchell.
The show is on Oct. 15th.
Barry has also set off on another adventure across Canada. This time he will find himself in Montreal and Nova Scotia for the next few weeks visiting friends and family. The east coast sure is beautiful this time of year. The fall colors are probably just springing into action.
Craig has a solo show coming up at the Britannia Community Centre’s 1st annual fall solstice coffee house on Sept 25.

Craig's set list for the Solstice show.

The boys spent a large portion of last night recording for their upcoming album with George Faulkner! Two tunes were laid down, "Little red Hen", and "Broken Tricycle." These officially mark the beginning of recording for Barry and Craig. There was some good mojo in the room last night and everything was done pretty much in one take per track.
This is a busy weekend for the boys as Barry is headed over to Roberts Creek on the Sun Shine coast to play some music, and Craig is headed up to to be one of the Saturday performers at the Princeton Folk festival.

The boys have been practicing and getting ready for the show this Sunday at the Village Outreach Society. It will be a fund raiser for a impoverished village in southern India. They go on at 6pm and are the first act of the evening. Come on down and enjoy the food, weather, and music. Who knows, you may even get to hear Barry play some slide guitar on the National!

Well, last week was a busy one for Barry and Craig. They played their feature show at the Jericho Folk Club last Tuesday with special guest Caroline Samorodin. It was a great show. They broke away from their more traditional routes to add a couple of 1960's songs that seemed relevant these days. These went over really well, but I am sure the boys will get back to their more traditional country blues for the next show. A few other highlights were Craig's new song, "So Hard", and Barry really laying it down on slide guitar on their version of "Rollin and Tumbling". It is also worth mentioning how amazing the open stage was that night! We live in a very talented city!
The next night Craig was the first act for Ultimate skateboard distributions 30th anniversary. Craig had Caroline accompany him again for this gig as well as his co-worker Zack on drums. For the final number Barry joined them on stage for a rocking version of "Spoonful".
Next up is a fund raiser gig at the Village Outreach Society on August 7th. Looks like the boys go on sometime after 5pm.

Barry's other band, Fraser Union, celebrated 35 years of sharing folk songs with a great show at the Jericho Folk Club last night. It was a fantastic concert and they played to an over capacity room. They played a set that covered songs from all of their albums spanning all the way back to 1984.

Speaking of the Jericho Folk Club, the boys will be the feature there on July 19th. They will be joined by the vocal powerhouse, Caroline Samorodin, again for this show. They have come up with a great set list that will include a number of new tunes as well as a few of the favourites. This is going to be a fun one!

Here is a little collage of shots taken by Craig's sister of the show.

We have another gig coming in May at the Main on Main, in Vancouver, BC!
The art for this was drawn again by Craig is actually the house of Mississippi John Hurt, which has now been turned into a museum. The boys thought it would be fitting to the image for a poster as collectively the JJJ are heavily influenced by his music.

Last night the guys got together with George Faulkner and started the initial recordings for a first album. Craig and Barry are pretty excited to work with George on this project after hearing the great work George did on Craig's album earlier this year. A bunch of time was spent hashing out a long list of potentials and recording them to see what will fit together the best for the album.
Here a few shots from the session.
In this first one we are recording our tune "Broken Tricycle".

Well the show at the Beats on Broadway last Friday night was a total hit. We played for a sold out audience! Beats on Broadway also has a great open stage format before and after the feature and some of the performers on Friday knocked it out of the park, including close JJJ friend Hagen Mitchell. His unique country influenced original tunes are quit something to hear.

Alright, Barry has arrived back on Canadian soil a little darker and a little more seasoned! Sounds like his trip was nothing short of amazing. Craig is meeting up with him tonight for a practice so we should be getting some juicy trip news up on here soon.
Don't forget about the Jook Joint Jokers feature this Friday night at the Beats on Broadway at the Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood House. They go on at 8pm.
In other news, Craig is back from his Blues Brigade Western Canada tour. This was a lot of fun that found him everywhere from Dawson Creek to Regina and a lot of spots in between.
Here is a shot from the Regina show of Craig playing his Cigar Box Guitar.

While in Moose Jaw, Craig had the opportunity of playing a rare 1930's National wood bodied Triolian. What a treat! The guitar belonged to Shane Reoch who along with his very talented son Ethan, opened for the Regina and Moose Jaw shows. They play a very tight and smooth flowing country blues set with some great history and some great song title picks. It was definitely a pleasure for Craig to have them on stage at two shows!

We just got word from Barry that he is still alive and loving travelling around Australia. He has spent the last 5 weeks taking in as much of the continent as possible. He is now off to New Zealand for a few and will be back in the good old Canada in not too long. Here is a great shot of him wearing one of the Jook Joint Jokers t-shirts in Melbourne.

Craig Williams is definitely excited that his new cd, "Country Living', has finally arrived. It is 9 songs, 8 originals and 1 cover, all heavily influenced by his love of country blues. Each cd has been numbered, signed, and each cd cover was hand sewn together by Craig himself. It was all recorded live in Vancouver by George Faulkner and was mastered in Nelson, BC by Shane Johnsen at Mopus studios. They are $20 each. If you would like one, e-mail Craig at [email protected] . They will also be available at Craigs show this Wed. at the Heartwood Community Cafe.

He played a cover of David Brombergs, "Spanish Johnny", to a full house that had come to see the feature, Hagen Mitchell. Hagen has been A Jook Joint Joker contributor and close friend since the beginning, often joining them on stage. Christmas is almost here and life is winding down for Craig and Barry as they take some much needed time to slow down and catch up with family and friends over the holidays. They both wish all of their friends, family, and fans a happy holidays!
In some other news, Craig and close friend George Faulkner got into the makeshift studio in his garage over the weekend to wrap up the recording of Craigs album. All the tracks are cut now, and we should see something physical in January. Still no word on what he is going to call it though. Any idea's?

Finally, Roger Holdstock, who is one third of Barry's band Fraser Union, will be the feature at the Vancouver Folk Song Society on Dec. 2nd. Word on the street is that Barry will be joining him onstage for a few tunes. Should be a fun night.

In the lull between gigs the Jook Joint Jokers, Barry and Craig, use the time to work on their other musical projects. Barry was out on Nov. 7th with his other band, Fraser Union, playing a benefit show at the Tipper restaurant. They had a few other musicians and bands join them and it looks like it was a great night. All the proceeds went to support the WISH drop in center society.

Yesterday was a fun show at a new venue for us. We played at the Kino cafe on Cambie street, for an afternoon set. The Kino is pretty famous in Vancouver for its live Flamenco dancing. It was absolutely pouring with rain and was downright miserable outside, which made for a pretty sweet backdrop for singing the blues.

We invited the amazing voice of Caroline Samorodin to join us again. There are decades of soul and experience in her young voice that lends itself to the blues in the most wonderful way. It is always a pleasure for us to have some local talent be able to join us on stage. It's sometimes nice to spice things up a bit.

Barry got really focused on some harmonies for a John Hurt song we are going to play. His guidance and persistence paid off with the three of us really coming together with some beautiful singing.
This picture of Barry really reflects how much fun we have when it comes to making music!

Mississippi John Hurt has been a huge influence on the music that Barry and Craig create. His melodic style and steady thumbed bass notes really grabbed a hold of us and have really shaped our playing styles. On top of this we both know many John Hurt songs and will be playing 4 of them at our upcoming Tipper Restaurant feature. 'Sliding Delta", "Creole Belle", "Louis Collins", and "Nobody Cares For Me" have all been added to the set list.
We sure have been busy practicing for our upcoming show on Saturday Oct 17th at the Tipper restaurant!

The Princeton Music Festival
The 8th annual Princeton music festival has wrapped up and we had a blast. So many great people and so much great music!
We started off the trip with an overnight stay at the Harris Cottage with a few close friends in beautiful Sunshine Valley. It was comfy and warm with the wood stove going and we played music long into the night. The next morning we made the drive to Princeton in the rain and got there just in time to check in before our set. We had an impromptu practice behind an old heritage building in the drizzle and then it was time to get on stage.

It was comfy and warm with the wood stove going and we played music long into the night. The next morning we made the drive to Princeton in the rain and got there just in time to check in before our set. We had an impromptu practice behind an old heritage building in the drizzle and then it was time to get on stage.
The lovely Mary Armitage introduced us and told a joke or two as we tuned up and plugged in. We played to a crowded tent for a solid half hour getting five of our favorite tunes in -- Police Dog Blues, Keep Your Big Mouth Closed, Heading Home, Walking Blues, and Soul Of A Man. By the time we were done the rain had stopped and the day started to brighten. I like to think that we played some part in that!
After our set we milled around and took in a few of the other amazing acts in between eating lunch and buying ukuleles. Barry, who had left for a Fraser Union practice, bumped into Craig and his crew and gave a little ukulele tutorial right on the street corner! He sure does love himself a ukulele jam!
From there it was on to the fabled after party that is held on the Saturday of the event every year at the Festival creators, Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat's home. A big heritage home with a nice large yard located in the heart of Princeton, it was a prime location to get all the musicians together for a night of great music. The party lasted long into the night under the glowing green of the Northern lights.
A huge thanks from the bottom of our hearts to Jon and Rika for organizing such a great event and for inviting us to be a part of it. Many thank you's to everyone who came and supported our show and bought our CD's. And finally a big thank you to Kolby Harris for taking these great pictures!

We hit the studio yesterday for our first recording session. We managed to get 4 original tunes down in our allotted time frame. It was a lot of fun for both Barry and Craig who seemed to really feed of each others energy. These were just the first 4 songs of the planned 12 that will be on our upcoming album.
A huge thank you to Victor Smith for making the time for us in his studio and for being so easy to work with.

We are happy to announce that Barry Truter has survived his month long stint touring Europe and is back on home turf! It sounds like he had an amazing trip and was very taken by the deep and interesting histories of the countries he visited. Here is a cool shot of him in Istanbul getting a few blues licks in on a traditional Turkish baglama aka suz.

We have some cool things happening for us this August. First, we are hitting the studio for the first round of recordings of what is going to be our first album. It has been a long time coming for us and we have whittled down our library to 12 songs we feel are our best. It is an exciting time for us. Also on Aug 15th we will be playing at the Princeton Folk Festival. If you are in the area, come see and hear us share some of our favorite country blues tunes.
Here is a shot of practicing in Barry's back yard. This was taken right before a wasp flew in between Craig's arm and the body of his guitar and stung him three times. Ahhhhh, summer ....

We just made up a grip of these cool Jook Joint Joker fridge magnets. The art for these was done by JJJ member Craig Williams from one of our past show posters. We will be offering these at our shows for $2 a piece. Our next show is at the Princeton Folk festival on August 15th.

Craig has just released a very limited EP. It is just 3 recordings he made at the Mopus studio's in Nelson BC back in March of this year. He was on a sales trip for his work at Ultimate skateboard dist, when he stopped in to see his good friend Shane Johnsen at Tribute boardshop. Shane is also the owner of Mopus Studios.
Only 50 EPs were made and each CD sleeve was made, sewn, numbered, and signed by Craig. If you are interested in getting your hands on one, please contact Craig at [email protected] . They are $10 each and going fast.

Craig and his good friend, Allen Forrister, spent some time busking in front of the Beat Merchant Record store in Steveston, B.C. on Saturday. It was a lot of fun sharing some tunes and making some spare change too! The weather was amazing! We couldn't have asked for a better setting or host.
Barry is still off bicycling around Europe. Here is a few shots of Allen and Craig doing their thing.

It might be a little quiet around the site for the next month or so. Barry is off riding his bike across Europe with his lovely partner Susan. That will leave Craig plenty of time to kick back and practice a few new songs. The Jook Joint Jokers will be back in action in August when we will be hitting the studio for some recording time and also hitting the stage at the Princeton Folk Festival.

Last week was an eventful one for JJJ. On Tuesday we were the first of two features at the Jericho folk club, the other being Bob Stark with his great stories and tunes. The air was warm, the sunset magnificent, and the audience very welcoming.
Then on Saturday we headed over to Mayne Island to play an evening show for Anita at the Camassia Cafe. We jammed on the ferry and dropped by the farmers market for a little busking. A great way to start such a lovely day. Spent the afternoon relaxing at our hosts Lael and Richard's amazing estate followed by a fun evening of music at the cafe. We shared a bit of the history of country blues, along with lots of traditional tunes, and a few originals. Lael supplied some percussion, and together with Barry's partner Susan, backed us up with beautiful vocal harmonies. Mayne Island free spirit Maria also joined us on stage for a very moving version of "Summertime".
Big thanks to Lael and Richard for hosting us, and to Anita at the Camassia Cafe for bringing us over to this little piece of heaven called Mayne Island. Here are a few shots from the trip.

Barry has been a strong lover of all things Ukulele for years. He has joined forces with fellow ukesters Steve Britten and Tom Hawken to bring you the "Salute to the Uke" - a a stylistically diverse selection of songs accompanied by various models of ukuleles.
